Champions Return for 2015 Baxters Loch Ness Marathon

Scottish champions Patryk Gierjatowicz and Jenn Wetton, pictured left, are among the leading athletes planning to take part in the Baxters Loch Ness marathon and festival of running later this month. Places are still available for Scottishathletics members, members of affiliated UK running clubs, overseas runners, and through official charity Macmillan Cancer Support and other affiliate charities โ€“ but only until midnight on Monday 7h September.

The festival, which takes place on Sunday 27 September, incorporates the Scottish menโ€™s and womenโ€™s marathon championships for the fifth year in a row and offers a ยฃ1,500 prize for the first man and woman to complete the course with further cash prizes for the top five finishers. Thereโ€™s also generous prizes for leading masters runners in the over-40, 50 and 60 age divisions. Cash awards go to the top three men and women in the Baxters River Ness 10Km with voucher awards to the leading three over-40,50 and 60 age group men and women.

Gierjatowicz, a member of the Hunters Bog Trotters club, has won the national menโ€™s marathon title at Loch Ness for the past two years after finishing second overall behind non-Scottishathletics members Tarus Elly, in 2013, and Tomas Abyu last year. Only two men, Joe McGhee (1954-56) and Fraser Clyne (1992-94) have previously won the magnificent A. H. Blair championship trophy three years in a row, and the Edinburgh-based Pole says heโ€™d be amazed if he was to become the third member of this exclusive club.

He said: โ€œI have been lucky to win for the past two years and if I did it for a third time Iโ€™d be able to retire feeling happy as so few people have won three times. I think, however, it will be difficult. It looks like being a good race with the likes of Corstorphineโ€™s Dougie Selman, who I have been training with, and Inverness runner John Newsom in the field. Iโ€™m sure there will be a good few others as well. Itโ€™s great because it will make it a hard race and we can all work together.โ€

Gierjatowicz came within a few seconds of his best time when recording 2hr 24min 21secs in this yearโ€™s London marathon and is keen to improve on that at Loch Ness. He said: โ€œI was a little disappointed with my time at London as I thought Iโ€™d get about 2hr 22mins. My training since then has been hard and Iโ€™ve been feeling tired a lot, but Iโ€™ll freshen up before Loch Ness. Iโ€™m planning to do a couple of 10km races before the marathon, at Stirling on 13 September, which is the Scottish championship race, then at Linlithgow the following week. Hopefully, after that Iโ€™ll be in shape to try to run my best time at Loch Ness.โ€

Jenn Wetton won the Scottish womenโ€™s title last year when holding off a late challenge from the 2013 winner, Megan Crawford (Fife AC). The Central AC athlete has, unfortunately, been struggling with an Achilles injury for much of the summer but is desperate not to miss out on the Baxters Loch Ness experience.

Wetton said: โ€œIโ€™ve only just got back into running after a long spell on the sidelines so Iโ€™m not going to be in any shape to do the marathon. I hate not being able to defend my title, but Iโ€™d still like to be there so I hope I can get to a decent level of fitness to do the 10km. Itโ€™s a great weekend and Iโ€™d be really disappointed to miss out completely.

โ€œMy Achilles problem flared up in April and I wasnโ€™t able to run for most of the summer. I did a lot of work in the gym but only made a gradual start back into running just over a month ago. Iโ€™m building up very gradually so I donโ€™t know what sort of shape Iโ€™ll be in by the end of September.

โ€œIโ€™m sure Iโ€™ll be able to do the 10km, but Iโ€™m just not sure at this stage how well Iโ€™ll be able to do it. It will be a good field with the likes of Jenny Bannerman doing it so Iโ€™ll need to make good progress to be competitive.โ€

Race Director Malcolm Sutherland is delighted that Gierjatowicz and Wetton are keen to return to the popular event which is now in itโ€™s 14th year. He said: โ€œItโ€™s great that top runners are keen to return to the Baxters festival of running, even when, in Jennโ€™s case, she is perhaps not in as good shape as sheโ€™d like to be.

โ€œWe are looking forward to some fantastic performances, not just from the leading athletes, but from everyone taking part. Itโ€™s as exciting to see the expressions of happiness, delight and, in some cases, relief, on the faces of participants throughout the field when they complete the challenge each of the races offers.โ€

The Baxters Loch Ness marathon is the premier event on the race day programme but the festival also includes other attractive runs catering for a wide range of ages and levels of experience.

Sutherland explained: “We try to offer something for all sectors of the running community. In addition to the marathon we have the Baxters River Ness 10Km, including a Corporate Challenge for teams, and this event consistently produces fast times. We also have the Baxters River Ness 5Km fun run, and the Wee Nessie children’s run which are always popular.

โ€œThereโ€™s also a superb atmosphere at the races with huge number of people turning out to watch and cheer on the competitors, particularly at the finish in Bught Park where the Event Village is located. As usual there will be plenty of activities at the Village to keep everyone entertained and there is always a fantastic atmosphere around the finish area.

โ€œBut thereโ€™s not much time left for anyone to join in. Final entries will close at midnight on 7th September and we definitely cannot accept any applications after that date.โ€
