Record-breaking Turnout and New Course Records
The 2024 Baxters Loch Ness Marathon and Festival of Running has celebrated a record-breaking year of race times and participation numbers. Over the course of the weekend, almost 10,000 runners from all around the world descended on the Scottish Highlands to take part in one of the UK’s most scenic running events.
This year’s event, held on the stunning banks of Loch Ness, saw a record number of 5,500 entries for the full marathon, 2,430 the 10K, Corporate Challenge, and a record number of 1,800 sign ups to the River Ness 5K, and the children’s Wee Nessie race. The spirit of the event was palpable as runners of all ages and abilities embraced the challenge, from seasoned athletes to first timers and those running in support of charity.
Renowned for its challenging course, the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon celebrated its champions this year with outstanding performances from both elite and local runners. In the men’s category, Moray
Pryde from Lothian Running Club crossed the finish line setting a new course record of 02:19:26, showcasing his exceptional speed and endurance to break a record that has stood since 2009. Meanwhile, Melissah Gibson from Ealing Eagles Running Club claimed victory once again in the women’s race with a remarkable time of 2:54:39, solidifying her reputation as one of the top marathon runners in Scotland and the first female winner for both 2023 and 2024. Both winners expressed their joy and gratitude for the incredible support from the crowd and the picturesque backdrop of Loch Ness, making this year’s event a memorable one for all participants.
Shaun Cumming from East Sutherland AC secured second place in the men’s category at this year’s Baxters Loch Ness Marathon, finishing with a time of 02:31:16. In the women’s category, Rachel Boswell from Thames Hare and Hounds claimed second place with an impressive time of 02:55:14. Third places went to Tom Charles of Chorlton Runners with a time of 02:31:59 and Katie Wilson from Highland Hill Runners who finished in 03:03:29.
Baxters River Ness 10K
Logan Rees of Fife Athletics Club secured first place in the men’s 10K category securing a new course record time of 00:28:52. Max Abernethy from Fraserburgh Running Club followed closely, finishing in 00:29:55, while Lachlan Oates of Shettleston Harriers claimed third place with a time of 00:31:00.
Caitlin Heggie of Inverness Harriers claimed the top spot as the first female to cross the 10K finish line with a time of 00:35:50. Robyn Pinder from Metro Aberdeen Running Club followed closely in second place, clocking 00:36:22, while Molly Rash of Highland Hill Runners secured third with a time of 00:36:25.
While title sponsor Baxters Food Group won the 10K Corporate Challenge with an cumulative time of 02:34:20.
Baxters River Ness 5K
Billy Sutherland from Ross County AC and Millie Glass Park from Young Meldrum Runners both delivered impressive performances in the River Ness 5K race. Sutherland clocked in at an exceptional time of 16:15, showcasing his speed across the course. Not far behind, Millie Glass Park won the women’s category with a strong finish of 17:55, representing Young Meldrum Runners with pride.
Olympian, Megan Keith attended the event as the official starter of the Baxters River Ness 5K and remained to present runners with their 5K medals following the race.

Macmillan Cancer Support, the official charity partner, also expressed their gratitude to the 200 participants running for a cause. “What a day! Huge congratulations to all our Team Macmillan runners who came, and conquered Baxters Loch Ness Marathon 2024” said Jimmy Holland, Challenge Events Programme Manager. “You’re all amazing, and a HUGE thank you for choosing to run for Macmillan Cancer Support, and making the miles count for people living with cancer across the UK. We hope all our runners feel incredibly proud and are enjoying some well-earned rest after their massive achievement”.
In addition to the races, the weekend was filled with festivities, including unmissable Q&A’s hosted by BBC’s Bryan Burnett with industry experts, expo, live music, pipes & drums, local food stalls, and family-friendly activities, making it a celebration of both fitness and community spirit.
With yet another record-breaking year, the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon continues to solidify its place as one of the most iconic and eagerly anticipated events on the UK sporting calendar.
